Types of Treatment & Rehabs
There are two basic types of treatment available in Los Angeles County. These are:
Inpatient, or residential treatment, is a type of program where the participant lives in a facility for a period of time. Typically, these rehabs will take place in 30 day durations and offer treatment that progresses to attend to the initial and ongoing needs of the individual.
Outpatient, or non-residential treatment, is a type of program where the participant lives at home (or in a sober living) and attends treatment during the day or evening. Typically, these rehabs take place in 30 day increments and offer treatment that is designed to support individuals that need support, but do not require the structure or intensity of inpatient rehabilitation.
There are two types of detox treatment available in Los Angeles County. These are:
Medical Detox Treatment
In the medically-assisted detoxification process, the participant is seen by an independent medical doctor in order to establish a medication-assisted detox protocol. This will be coordinated with the support of the treatment center and is designed to prevent dangerous and uncomfortable signs of withdrawal. When an individual is physically dependent on habit-forming drugs (including alcohol or prescription medications) the medical detoxification treatment approach is advisable and usually necessary.
Non Medical Detoxification
In the non-medical detoxification process, the participant is not seen by an independent medical doctor. Medications are not used to assist with withdrawal during the protocol, which is reserved strictly to observing the individual. This is the traditional “old school” method by which many treatment centers in Los Angeles still operate. The idea is to encourage a little suffering in order to anchor the participant in revolting at the idea of using again. This is not an advisable method for detox treatment whenever an individual is physically dependent on any habit-forming drugs.
There are two basic types of treatment approaches, or treatment philosophies, available in Los Angeles County. These are:
Clinical Treatment Philosophy
Under the clinical approach, treatment attends to both addiction and co-occurring disorders. The basics of the philosophy center on the idea that addiction is a symptom of deeper, underlying psychiatric or psychological issues. The focus of the rehabilitation target these root causes in an effort to help people better understand their own addictive pathology and to develop a healthier set of coping mechanisms to deal with core issues. The clinical treatment philosophy is considered “sophisticated”, or a form of evidence-based treatment, and is offered primarily through individual sessions and personalized treatment planning. These types of programs tend to be smaller than their behavior-mod counterparts.
Behavior Modification Technique
Under the behavior modification technique, treatment tends to be confrontational and centered on the concepts of negative and positive behavioral reinforcement. Largely offered in the group setting, individuals undergoing this type of treatment are consitently confronted by “senior” residents and staff in an effort to eradicate negative forms of self-expression, while being rewarded for acting in ways that are seen as being in accordance with the principles of 12-step recovery programs. These programs tend to be quite large, as the philosophy is centered on focusing the power of the group in order to diminish the beliefs of the individual.
How to Choose a Program
The previous sections have offered information on inpatient vs. outpatient rehab, medical vs. non medical detox, and clinical vs. behavioral treatment.
Now that you know the basics about what rehabs offer you should examine the following questions:
Do you need an inpatient or an outpatient program?
Do you need medical detox, or will a non-medical detox program suffice?
- Would you prefer to attend a clinical or a behavior modification rehab?
If you know the answers to the questions above, it’s time to consider methods for payment and the cost for treatment. Visit Insurance Vs. Private Pay to learn more.
