    1 2 1 Rehab

    Overall Rating:

1 2 1 Rehab is an addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment process located in Los Angeles, California. They also have offices in New York City. They offer totally customized treatment and are reportedly, “the most individualized program in the nation.” Professionals and ex-clients alike rave about the approach, saying the process is both “intensive” and “effective.” One alum said he’d been through 3 other high-end centers and “nothing compared to 1 2 1.” Sounds mysterious – but in reality, 1 2 1 Rehab is simply an highly tailored evidence-based program. If you have $80,000 + to shell out for rehab – and you don’t mind being the only person in treatment – this is the program for you.

    Authentic Recovery Center (ARC)

    Overall Rating:

The Authentic Recovery Center (ARC) is an addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment program in West Los Angeles, California. They offer a full continuum of care that includes both short and long-term treatment options. The professionals we spoke to referred to the program as “effective” and “evidence-based,” while ex-clients and family members unanimously described the staff as “caring” and “kind.” ARC is owned and operated by licensed clinicians (whereas most rehabs in LA are corporately held) and was routinely commended in exit interviews as being “highly individualized.” They have both residential and outpatient options for care.

    Betty Ford Center

    Overall Rating:

The Betty Ford Center is an addiction treatment program located in Palm Springs, California. Although not technically in Los Angeles, we had so much feedback about the facility we had to include a rehab review for the “mystical” Betty Ford Clinic. We were surprised that a specific point was ritually reported in consumer reviews. “Great for older folks, not so much for the younger population,” as one alum put it, was an across the board observation. It seems, even the center acknowledges that it’s approach is geared much more for traditional adult alcoholics. They are rapidly trying to create programs that address co-occurring disorders and poly-substance abuse, in order to attract a “complicated and younger category of client” (their words) back to the fold. It’s still reportedly a bit in the works though. They offer both residential and outpatient care.

The Clare Foundation is an addiction treatment facility in Santa Monica, California. They offer residential and outpatient services and are largely supported by charitable contributions, state and county funding, and a limited private-pay and insurance-pay client base. With county contracts in place for Drug Court funding, many clients are court ordered to the program for alternative sentencing.

Cliffside Malibu is an addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment program in Malibu, California. They offer a full residential continuum of care that encompasses both short and long-term treatment options. One alumni we spoke to (who reported they’d been through 3 other Malibu facilities) said, “Cliffside is the best Malibu rehab by far.” They only have residential options for care but do refer to other programs for outpatient when necessary.

    Cri Help

    Overall Rating:

Cri Help is an addiction treatment facility in North Hollywood, California. Heavily structured and heavily populated this facility was described as both “the real deal for hardcore junkies” and “horrible” by one ex-client in the same sentence. Supported by state and county funding, and a limited private-pay and insurance-pay client base, the program also has county contracts in place for Drug Court funding. Many Cri Help clients are court ordered to treatment as an alternative to jail. They have both residential and outpatient options.

    Kaiser Permanente

    Overall Rating:

Kaiser Permanente offers an addiction treatment program in West Los Angeles, California. They also have locations in Hollywood and East LA. A hospital-based program, ex-clients say accessing Kaiser Permanente presents huge hurdles in terms of getting help. With only day treatment and night patient groups for addiction (no residential care), the detoxification services they provide members actually takes place in a psychiatric ward in East LA. Client feedback on Kaiser’s detox program was routinely, “something out of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Unlike many insurers, Kaiser Permanente does not offer any out of network benefits, so you’ll have to stay in their system if you want to use Kaiser Insurance to access treatment services.

    Impact

    Overall Rating:

Impact is an addiction treatment facility in Pasadena, California. Called “hardcore” and “a tough place” by ex-clients more than once in exit interviews, they offer residential and outpatient services and are largely supported by state and county funding, and a limited private-pay and insurance-pay client base. With county contracts in place for Drug Court funding, many Impact clients are court ordered to treatment for alternative sentencing. They also operate a program inside the LA County Jail.

    Matrix Institute

    Overall Rating:

The Matrix Institute (Matrix Model) is an addiction and co-occurring disorders program located in Los Angeles, California. Matrix only offers day programs and night patient treatment. Most client reports were varied on aspects of the process, with one consistent theme; “Good concept, poor delivery.” The Matrix Institute offers a non-12 step theme with a focus on cognitive behavioral therapy. The problem it seems, is that ex-clients report the actual groups and individual sessions are provided by “interns” and there is a lot of “staff turnover.” Despite seeming good on paper, the program has a bad habit of hiring newbies who are looking to get licensure hours completed. These folks typically move on after only a short stay as staff, making the program feel more like a “therapy training system” then a solid recovery program.

    Morningside Recovery

    Overall Rating:

Morningside Recovery is not actually a licensed residential treatment center – but you’d never be able to tell that from their website. It’s rare that we’ll ever issue a stern warning, but buyer beware this “rehab” in Newport Beach, California. Morningside Recovery has had all it’s residential licenses revoked after numerous infractions and death investigations. The program is still operating sober living homes and holds a certification for outpatient treatment. Ex-clients have called us and submitted horror story after horror story about the shenanigans going on here. On the positive side, clients said the food was “great” and the houses were “really nice.”

    Narconon Los Angeles

    Overall Rating:

Narconon offers an addiction treatment program in Los Angeles, California. Based on the concept of Scientology, clients are called “students” and undergo a rigorous and unusual approach to gain recovery skills – at least when compared to other traditional or evidence-based programs. Client reviews were extremely polarized, with those that obviously embraced Scientology on one side, and those that didn’t on the other. They don’t believe in the use of medications for drug withdrawal and Narconon has found itself in a bit of hot water over some recent deaths in their programs. Most alum on both sides of the Scientology fence did report that they felt the self-proclaimed Narconon 76% success rate was “inaccurate” or “misleading.” That said, if you’re a Scientologist – go here. If you’re not – don’t.

    New Directions

    Overall Rating:

New Directions is an addiction treatment program in West Los Angeles, California. A resource offered through the Veterans Administration, the program is available only to veterans. Reportedly “strict – but caring,” the program offers primarily long-term residential treatment. Funded by federal resources, money is not required for admission, but “willingness” certainly is. Men and women are separated by location and privileges are slowly gained as the treatment commences. Most alumni state that New Directions provides the “tools” to stay clean and sober. As one ex-client put it, “they teach you how to stick and stay.”

    Pasadena Recovery Center (PRC)

    Overall Rating:

Pasadena Recovery Center is an addiction treatment facility in Pasadena, California. Although they sublet space to Dr. Drew Pinksy for the filming of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, don’t expect to see the seasoned addiction doc if you decide to go there. Separated into two modules, Pasadena Recovery Center is actually huge, with the main campus serving around 70 + clients at any one time. The “celebrity” side treats fewer people but clients report that it’s “spartan” and “overpriced.” With both a private-pay and insurance-pay population, many clients report they went to PRC “thinking it was Celebrity Rehab – (drum roll) – but it wasn’t.” They offer both residential and outpatient options for care.

    Phoenix House

    Overall Rating:

Phoenix House is an addiction treatment center located in Santa Monica, California. Actually right on the Venice Boardwalk, you’d have to go in to realize what goes on here. Centered on the concept of behavior-modification, the Phoenix House is completely free and sponsored by charitable donations, as well as state and federal funding. Most ex-clients say it was a “decent” or “fair” experience overall, but do acknowledge that the confrontational approach isn’t for everyone.

    Salvation Army

    Overall Rating:

The Salvation Army offers an addiction treatment program in Santa Monica, California. Called the Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC), the program is men-only. Totally free, at least at the beginning – the program provides a homeless shelter where men can seek recovery through the 12 step program and – literally - work. With a heavy focus on giving back, shortly after enrollment, the men are put to work at various Salvation Army enterprises, where as one alum put it, “you begin to build self-esteem.” There isn’t much clinical attention here – but that doesn’t mean clients don’t feel cared for. One ex-client said, “I’ve never felt as safe in my life as I did when I was there.”

    Seasons Malibu

    Overall Rating:

Seasons Malibu is the same program as Serenity Malibu – or is it Seaside Recovery Malibu (?) – anyway, they all ran into some legal and financial trouble so they had to change their names around in order to continue operating. See the next review for Serenity Malibu to learn more about Seasons Malibu (sorry – it’s confusing for us too).

    Serenity Malibu

    Overall Rating:

Serenity Malibu – aka Seasons Malibu, or aka Seaside Recovery Malibu, depending on which lawsuit you’re reviewing - is an addiction treatment center in Malibu, California. It’s hard to find a Los Angeles-based program with more complaints than this one. Ex-clients report that the facility is “pretty,” but “they’re all about the money.” Apparently, Serenity Malibu says just about anything to get people in the door – but once you’re there, “not a lot happens.” Numerous alum stated they were quoted different prices than other clients, or that some participants didn’t pay anything at all and used their insurance. As one ex-client put it, “I paid $65,000 to be there. Forget the fact that I never even had a therapy session until my second week. Just the fact that other people were there for $15,000, or even $5,000, made me feel totally used.” There have been several lawsuits and complaints against Serenity Malibu, ranging from breach of contract, failure to deliver services, all the way up to heavy accusations of insurance fraud. They only offer residential services, but as they put it – you’ll receive “world class addiction treatment for less.” Buyer beware this self-proclaimed “# 1 Luxury Rehab in the World.”

    SOBA Treatment Center

    Overall Rating:

SOBA Treatment Center, or SOBA Recovery, is an addiction rehab facility located in Malibu, California. Ritually critiqued by both alumni and insiders in the know who said the structure was non-existent and that “people relapse all the time,” we were a bit surprised to see that they were even in business. But according to an ex-staffer, they have a great business plan. The staff member said, “…the program gets patients by scouring alumni meetings at high-end centers around Malibu. They’ll hand them a business card at the meeting and wait for the shoe to drop, as in they get kicked out, or leave. [...] Then they call the kids parents and tell them they can come to SOBA. [...] The parents don’t know what to do, they’re on the East Coast or something, and they just want to know their kid is safe so they shell out the dough.” This far out strategy must be working – ’cause SOBA’s still around – for now.

    Tarzana Treatment Center

    Overall Rating:

Tarzana Treatment Center is an addiction treatment facility in Tarzana, California. They have additional locations in East LA and south of Los Angeles. With wide nets, Tarzana collects city, county, and state monies in the form of contracts for addiction care. They are literally huge and treat lots of people – but their reviews were surprisingly similar. Tarzana does have a client base that is court ordered to treatment through Drug Court for alternative sentencing. They offer both residential and outpatient options for care.

    UCLA

    Overall Rating:

UCLA is a hospital-based psychiatric program in Westwood, California. They used to offer residential substance abuse services – but now they only offer addiction treatment at an outpatient clinic on campus. The psychiatric wing recently underwent a 829 million dollar expansion – but as one alum put it – “when you’re locked up, who cares if there’s a 10 thousand dollar painting on the wall.” If you need detoxification, UCLA might let you in if you have good insurance. But as most ex-clients say, you’ll be in a “locked-down” facility with, “people who really belong there.” Most professionals we spoke to have all but given up on the UCLA system. In talking with one prominent psychiatrist, he said, “…dealing with UCLA is a huge hassle. Their bureaucracy knows no bounds.” Another ex-client said, “It looked good on paper, but when you go to a psych ward and you see a psychiatrist, for like, 5 minutes, once, it just doesn’t feel like they care at all.”

    Visions Adolescent Treatment Center

    Overall Rating:

Visions adolescent treatment center is an addiction and co-occurring disorders program in Malibu, California. They also offer an outpatient facility in Brentwood, California. They only treat adolescents, and that’s too bad for the rest of us – ’cause they are reportedly one of the “best” treatment centers in the United States. Ex-clients, family members, even all the professionals we spoke to referred to Visions as the “gold standard.” Participants are offered a full arsenal of services; medical, psychiatric, psychological – they’ve got all the bases covered. With a full continuum of care the program provides both short and long-term treatment options.
